About Us

Kuttanadu is a land located below the sea level which is very scenic and beautiful. It is inhabited by a community of economically backward small farmers and agricultural labourers. In those days, the people of Kuttanadu mainly depended on boats for their travel. At that time, one had to go to Changanassery or Chengannur for higher education or technical education. It was a period where a lot of time had to be spent on boat trips.

It was on this occasion in 1978 that the Kerala Government invited applications for the establishment of new private ITIs in the state. Thus Hon'ble Eepan Kandakudy, who was the MLA of Kuttanadu, tried to start an ITI and got permission for it. He gave St. Mary's Church, Pulincunnoo, the responsibility of starting the ITI. Very Rev. Fr. George Srampickal, who was the Vicar of Pulincunnoo Church at that time, took up that order. Honorable Fr. George Srampickal as Convener constituted an Education Committee comprising of eminent CC Chacko Chirayil, Ealias Manalayil, Kunjamma Purackal, Varichan Puthenpurackal, Jose Kavalechira, Appachan Panagadu and Appachan Velakkalam. They were the ones who led the initial activities of this institution. Also, a techincal committee was formed and started working by including prominent people from Pulincunnoo itself who had acquired technical education. They bought the buildings, machinery, tools etc. for the institution and submitted it for the approval of NCVT.

NCVT approved admissions to 4 batches of 18 candidates each for the basic trades of electrician, draftsman civil, wireman and plumber. The institution was officially inaugurated by the Honorable Minister, Late Mr. TM Jacob. On the occasion, the Principal Rev. Fr. George Srampickal named the institution as "St.Mary's ITC". This institution has always had the blessings of the Holy Mother Mary.

Since the number of ITIs at that time was relatively less, not only these locals but also people from other districts stayed and studied here from their relative's house or rented houses. Students kept coming to this institution because of good training and good success rate and if they pass these trades, they can get jobs with higher salary in the country and abroad. So the reputation of this institution had increased day by day. In those times, admission was given to students on the basis of marks and interview.

Due to the lack of students, the non metric trade wireman was discontinued and an electrician unit was started in its place. Sports and arts competitions were held every year to nurture the creativity of the students. The Kabaddi competition, which is conducted on a trade and unit basis, has attracted the attention of everyone. St. Mary's ITC team had participated and won in the Nehru Trophy boat race held at Alappuzha Punnamada, the Rajiv Gandhi Trophy boat race at Pulincunnoo and the boating competitions held at Kishkinta Amusement Park.

The respected vicars of the Pulincunnoo Church and the members of the education committee have given their wholehearted support to the growth of this institution. Even today, the buildings used for ITI were built during the time of Late Very Rev. Fr. Zakarias Kaithara and Late Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Kottarathil. Newly built store for ITI was built during the time of Rev. Fr. Mathew Chooravadi. Currently, Very Rev. Fr. Tom Puthenkalam is the Manager and Rev. Fr. Bless Karinganamattam serves as the Asst. Manager of the institution. Mrs. Ansamma Joseph V Moolakkunnam is serving as the Principal of the firm. About 80 students graduate from here every year. Over 3500 students have studied and passed here in the last 45 years and are famously working and living in different parts of the world.
